Origami History
Paper folding (Origami) originated in the 6th Century in Japan by Buddhist monks. Origami itself is the concatenation of two Japanese words, “ori” and “gami,” meaning “fold” and “paper,” respectively. Prior to origami being the description of paper folding, several other words were used to mean the same thing: “orisue,” “tatamingami,” “orimono,” “orikata,” and others.
Origami has become known as the term for decorative paper folding, and is used to make many three dimensional shapes out of different paper folds. These range from paper airplanes and decorative napkin folds to artistic and imaginative animal shapes, creative shapes out of dollar bills and more. There are many books on origami and its designs in every library. There are even calendars that depict different designs for each day.
